Look Toward Iceland for Economic Relief

iceland

As Iceland’s economy is suffering just like the rest of us maybe we should look to them for some solutions.  Remember the Library, the typewriter, the sewing machine?  Iceland does.  Iceland Review Online had the following to say:

Strip a nation of its financial stability, its currency and its good name, and you’ll find a sad nation indeed. But deprive a Nordic country of its IKEA, and you’ll see what desperation means. While the de facto palace of Icelandic consumerism hasn’t shut its doors, the nation was dealt a crippling blow to the wallet when it unsuspectingly opened its papers and, to its collective horror, discovered that IKEA had raised its prices by 25 percent. In fact, many of the trendy brands Icelanders have come to associate with their sleek, modern identity – like Apple, Range Rover and Prada – are being forced to raise prices and, in some extreme cases, return merchandise to manufacturers. But like an amputee who continues to feel the tingle of his severed toes, the nation still seeks to flex its materialist muscle with puny purses. The buying frenzy has simply been relocated to the aisles of Gódi Hirdirinn, Reykjavík’s outlet for second-hand shopping. Who needs MacBooks when we have typewriters? With a treadle sewing machine you can make your own fashion! Perhaps the nation of trendsetters is simply ahead of the curve—as economies fail around the globe it appears that thrift is the new black this season.

Solutions

When you have a problem with a company like T-Mobie, Sleepy’s, Sears etc and customer service doesn’t work write a letter to the president of the company.  Sometime a second letter is needed.  Also, if you use your credit card to make the purchase a letter can be written to them too.  When writing the letter start by making sure you (in some way) praise the company, explain the problem and explain exactly what you want.  Don’t just write you want compensation.  If you want a new phone and a month of free service for their mistake write it.  State what you want, clearly.  A good portion of the time this process works if it doesn’t at least you tried.

Appalachia Children

On Friday I was watching 20/20 on ABC and the topic was  “Children of the Appalachia Mountain” .  The first question I asked was, “where are the Appalachia Mountains?”  I knew I had heard of it but I had no idea where it was.  It’s in Kentucky.  I had missed 15min but it didn’t matter I continued watching.  Diane Sawyer showed how rough life was in these parts of the United States.  Here is a glimpse of how life is in these parts of the Appahas; up to three times the national poverty rate, an epidemic of prescription drug abuse, the shortest life span in the nation, toothlessness,(they drink a lot of Mountain Dew which has tons of sugar) cancer and chronic depression.  Watching this you can’t believe people are living like this in the United States.  The Appalachia children are living here and their situation is dire.  You  have to make a point and watch or read if only for a few minutes.  Click here.

Jessica Simpson Weight Gain

Jessica Simpson has gained weight and the media is in an uproar.  Who the hell cares?!  Why is the media so fixated on this issue ?  The woman isn’t fat she looks like a regular woman with curves and she looks good.  Why is it when a woman gains a little weight it makes headline news but when a man looks like a whale the media turns a blind eye.  You don’t here Billy Bush from that stupid show commenting on how fat Robert De Niro is or how old Al Pacino looks. Nope! It’s all about the way the woman looks and the reality is that most men(not Billy Bush) do not care how a woman looks.  He cares that she looks good but have you ever heard a man say “You forgot to wear mascara” or “You need fake eyelashes”.  Most men are not that superficial.  The media needs to focus on more important things like the WAR, the ECONOMY, HEALTH INSURANCE, GANGS, HUMAN TRAFFICING, this list is truly endless.  If the aim is to entertain then ENTERTAIN US!

Kitchen Tips

I was reading a magazine and found some helpful tips for those of us that spend some time in the kitchen.

1. Deodorize food containers with newspaper then wash before use.  I haven’t tried it yet.

2. To deodorize and disinfect sponges or kitchen rags use vodka it’ll kill the bacteria and there will be no smell.  Remember to use vodka since it has very little smell. I’ve tried this and it works.

3. When trying to open that jar of sauce instead of running it under hot water or banging it just put on your kitchen rubber gloves and twist.  The rubber grips the top making it easy to twist.  I’ve been doing this for years and YES it works.

Sims 3

I use to play Sims for hours then I got Sims 2 and played it as well but it was a little more time consuming and now Sims 3 is coming out. I’m not sure I’ll be getting it but it’ll be out there for others to enjoy.

Day After Christmas

It’s the day after Christmas and I had a few things to do but I think I’m coming down with something I just hope it’s not the flu.  I took a pill and hope it’ll work cause whatever I have I don’t want it to last.

Jessica and The Office

As a fan of the show The Office I was disappointed to hear that Jessica Alba was going to be a guest on the show.  I don’t really care for her.  But then I learned that she’s not actually going to be acting with The Office cast.  She’s going to be starring with Jack Black on a movie that The Office cast tries to download on a slow work day.  I feel better.  The episode is an hour and it’s suppose to air after the SuperBowl.

Donate used Computers

As I was looking for a coat in the closet I came across an old friend.  My beige Dell monitor, CPU and keyboard.  I had totally forgotten that my closet was hiding this relic.  I remember not wanting to throw it away because it does still work.  Now I’ve come across it again and have no idea what to do with it.  I thought of donating it and was happy to come across an article that spoke about this same issue.  Where to donate used tech items.  It says to check out your local  Goodwill or Salvation Army.  You can also check out Non-profit organizations, such as National Cristina Foundation (www.cristina.org) or Computer Recycling Center and Computers & Education(www.crc.org), which provides refurbished computers to public schools and community nonprofits also check out the World Computer Exchange(www.worldcomputerexchange.org), which gives donated techno-goods to kids in developing countries.

Operation Santa Letter

Today I went to the post office to see what were the hours of their Operation Santa.  Operation Santa for those that don’t know is where letters address to Santa Clause end up.  I went to the main branch and they had letter from all the five boroghs, letters from out of state and letter written in spanish.  I read so many letters I wish I had the means to respond to all the letter but ultimatly I ended up with three letters.  I initially wanted only one letter but I don’t know what happened now I have there kids to buy gifts for.  I think this is a great idea, Operation Santa.  Some letter are kids asking for stuff like Play Station 3  or the Wii which is expensive but others as for anything just a mere gift.  Parents even write asking for pampers, beds, gift cards, clothing, the list is endless.  If you can go and check in your local post office if they offer, Operation Santa.
